Jefferson County was part of Virginia when The War started. The county provided ten companies to the Confederacy. In the museum, you will find many artifacts of The War and of the veterans that fought it.

Notable among the men from Jefferson County are: Lieutenant Colonel R. Preston Chew, Major Wells Hawks, Colonel Henry Kyd Douglas, Colonel Alexander Boetler, Colonel Lawson Botts, Colonel John Augustine Washington and General Edwin Gray Lee.

There are twenty-five markers in the county that mark significant military operations.

Jackie Milburn and Warren Schwartz, from Hardy County West Virginia, are good friends of the museum. While we were cleaning display cases this winter, Jackie took pictures of some of the contents of three cases. If you would like to see what is in cases 10, 22 and 23 click here.
